Maximising energy efficiency

From an environmental point of view, the greatest impact of a luminaire is during its operating phase and, specifically, how much energy it consumes.

Thorlux constantly strives to make its luminaires as energy-efficient as possible by focusing on the performance of the LEDs and the efficiency of the optics. However, lighting controls play a significant part in delivering maximum energy efficiency by automatically switching the luminaire off when no one is present or dimming it down if daylight is available.

The company led the way with energy-saving controls in the 90s and launched its first internet connected system in 2006. This evolution led to the arrival of the SmartScan wireless lighting management system in 2016, where energy savings often exceed 70% when compared with conventional technology.

Efficient LED technology

Thorlux has significantly invested in LED technology, including circuit board design, software development, thermal modelling, and optical lens design. This investment ensures its luminaires provide optimal lighting performance with the best energy use and minimal stray emissions. Using the most up-to-date and high-quality LEDs (based on criteria such as colour rendering, luminous flux, and thermal stability) guarantees that Thorlux luminaires offer exceptional luminous efficacies and working lifetimes.

Saving energy with SmartScan

Thorlux SmartScan is a revolutionary wireless lighting management system that monitors energy performance and operational information for connected standard and emergency luminaires. This information is displayed on the password-protected SmartScan website, accessible on any internet-connected device.

Energy consumption measurements are accessible for an entire installation, individual rooms, or each luminaire. Data is displayed in kilowatt-hours (kWh), cost, and corresponding carbon values. In retrofit projects where the prior energy usage for lighting is known, the system will also display a cumulative total of achieved savings.

SmartScan luminaires contain a discrete integral sensor which monitors ambient light and occupancy, controlling output to the correct level and only illuminating when needed.

Choosing luminaires with a lighting control system will result in slightly more embodied carbon at installation. However, significantly less operational carbon will be generated over the lighting system’s lifetime.

SmartScan optimisation

Thorlux luminaires are highly efficient LED fittings that provide a long working life with minimal maintenance. But connecting these luminaires to the SmartScan lighting management system adds a wealth of functionality to optimise the installation and help building operators reduce their energy consumption.

SmartScan data logging and monitoring

Thorlux’s SmartScan web platform allows users to check their energy performance data and access complete operational information for all connected standard and emergency luminaires. The online portal supplies a lighting overview of the entire site, down to the performance and operation of an individual luminaire.

SmartScan is a feature-rich system that can provide intelligent lighting management, status monitoring, occupancy profiling, report on air quality and much more. SmartScan data provides deeper insights to help building operators understand and manage sites, reducing carbon emissions.

And with the expanded SmartScan Analytics system, there is even greater scope for additional efficiencies and improved occupant well-being.

SmartScan Analytics and wellbeing

SmartScan Analytics builds upon the SmartScan software platform to provide building operators with an unrivalled overview of all building services.

Using the lighting network to carry other service or asset communications removes unnecessary duplication, and installing specialist sensors, data loggers and volt-free contacts onto other assets enables the capture of data for analytics. Gas, water, electricity, air quality, carbon dioxide levels, and more can all be monitored - on top of SmartScan's comprehensive features.

SmartScan Analytics provides users with previously unreported metrics for trend analysis, improving energy consumption and environmental information for better occupant well-being. SmartScan Analytics can be extended throughout the building using enabled Thorlux luminaires.
